Teamwork on a Sailing Boat

A well-managed company is one that ensures effective coordination and communication between its departments. Bring together the best finance, production, procurement and marketing managers, and you will probably still not create the best company. Unless these individuals work together in harmony, they cannot be expected to succeed as a team.

This simple principle of systems thinking forms the foundation of the programme. Like a commercial organisation, a sailing boat consists of different functional units, including the headsail, mainsail, helm and navigation. Unless these units work in harmony, the boat will not move forward successfully—even when each individual performs their own role perfectly.

The programme brings people who work closely together into a different physical environment—the sea—so that they can experience first-hand that they are inseparable parts of a greater whole. It also aims to help participants understand and appreciate the importance of both their own roles and those of their teammates when performing their responsibilities in professional life.

What Will Participants Learn?

  • A system is a whole and cannot be separated into independent parts. The individual excellence of each component means little on its own. For the entire system to succeed, harmony between its parts is more important than the isolated excellence of each one. Participants will experience and learn the fundamental principles of systems thinking through practical activities.
  • How leadership emerges within a team and the leadership roles assumed by each team member
  • Rotating leadership—leadership changing hands—and its impact on teamwork
  • The importance of sharing and empathy in achieving success
  • Why team members need to support one another and understand every role within the team
  • How to resolve disagreements and build consensus within a team
  • The impact of differences in values and ethical perspectives on team performance

Number of Participants

The programme requires a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 15 participants. Each boat can accommodate a maximum of 5 participants; therefore, a programme involving three boats can host up to 15 participants.

Duration

3 full days

Participants must board and settle into the boats on the evening before the programme begins. Each boat is accompanied by a captain with at least 15 years of experience.
